The Poodle

Poodles are exceptionally intelligent, active dogs. We joke that ours speak English. We brought home our first poodle puppy ten days before our daughter was born. Poodles can be excellent family dogs, if, like all dogs, they are trained correctly. Because poodles are so smart, they train easily, but do require stimulation. These are not the dogs to leave alone all day and expect them to be happy.

Poodles do not shed and are an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies. However, with that coat comes the requirement for frequent grooming. Poodles must be groomed regularly or their coats will matte, which is extremely painful and dangerous for the dog. With a good pair of shears and the help of YouTube, you can groom them yourself. However, if you are not a seasoned groomer, we recommend letting a professional take care of the grooming to start so that your dog becomes accustomed to the process with someone more confident.

If you are able to give a poodle the love and attention he or she deserves, you will find an excellent companion and loyal lifelong friend.

The Puppy

Raising a puppy can be as challenging as it is rewarding. For the first few months specifically, you must plan to set aside additional time to train and shape your puppy into a well-developed dog. While we introduce potty training while your puppy is with us, understand that it takes most puppies 4-6 months (and some longer) to master the skill. Setting boundaries and expectations early is key. You must commit to socializing your puppy as much as you can so that he or she will become a well-rounded adult dog. Keep in mind, larger breeds such as the standard poodle are not fully grown for at least two years.
